Car Wall Art

Car Wall Art {Dolen Diaries}

The Dolens dig unusual artwork. We love having pieces that you aren’t going to find in the neighbor’s house and have a great story. This Car Wall Art is one of those pieces.

In 2010 a dear friend had a Soapbox Derby Race for his birthday party. It was SO much fun and the car building was really competitive. Micah made our car look like a vintage 2002 BMW {not the year 2002, the car model 2002} and we all loved it.  So much work went into this and after the race we weren’t sure what to do with it. We didn’t want to store the huge car but we also couldn’t stand the thought of getting rid of it. After a little brainstorming we decided to cut the profile out and make it into art.

So Micah measured 2.5″ front the edge all along one side of the car and he starting cutting.

Using a jig saw he cut all the way from the front to the back of the car.

And an amazing piece of car wall art was born!

The finishing touch was add a couple of the tires from the soapbox car. I know not everyone has a soapbox car hanging out in their garage to make car wall art out of but I hope this inspires you to look for unusual pieces that you can turn into art in your home!

Boy Bedroom For All Ages

Boy Bedroom For All Ages {Dolen Diaries}

I’m not a big fan of bedrooms that only last a short season of a child’s life. I’m all in for a little freshen up with a few new accessories here or there but I find complete overhauls every couple of years just unreasonable. When I was putting together my youngest son’s room I really was trying to create a Boy Bedroom For All Ages not just the his current preschool years.

Boy Bedroom for All Ages

Our home was built in ’64 so the bedrooms are on the smaller side. I personally don’t mind this but it does mean that I have to be choosy with furniture selections. I started with the daybed from Ikea. This daybed actually pulls out to create a full size bed if needed and I love the extra storage in the bottom of the bed. I have to say though what I love most is the amount of floor space a day bed leaves for play!

Boys Bedroom that will grow with them! {Dolen Diaries}

This small space needed a dresser and some height. Not only was the charcoal color what I was looking for it also had a vintage feel which I knew would add a little personality and not look like kid furniture. Oh and it was totally in budget since it was from Ikea! I found this awesome orange metal lamp on clearance at Land of Nod. I had read somewhere that you were supposed to have a pop of red in every room and I decided orange was my new red.

Cool Boy Bedroom Art

I stole this fabulous piece of car art from the garage. With it’s vintage vibe and fun pop of lime I knew it would be perfectly compliment the metal lamp. {Pop back over on Wednesday to see how this was made…}

Boys Bedroom Display Wall

I found this classic grey bedspread and pillow sham set at Target. The set only came with one sham and there weren’t extra shams available for purchase….grr! I really wanted to set a neutral stage so going with a pop of color was out of the question. Now I had to find another set of shams that had a good grey without being too much grey so it wouldn’t clash with the bedspread. This was quite a task. I finally found these off white and grey print shams.

The wall above the bed is a work in progress. As a former kindergarten teacher, I LOVE kid art! Micah teases that I’d have it everywhere if it weren’t for him. {He may be right…it’s just SO precious!} I painted this chicken wire frame that was from my old classroom a bright orange {Martha Stewart’s Carrot} to clip all of his preschool works of art to. {Heart melting moment…Kell loves monster trucks and mom! It even says so on his sweet little torn paper heart art!}

I added two shorter photo ledges for more display. I know as Kell gets older he’ll have special things that he wants to put up there. For now we have a little egg art that we painted together, a cuddly elephant, and a nursery rhyme book that was given to me for my 1st Christmas. The second ledge has a colorful puzzle and a little sharpie name art made by yours truly. I still need to fill in this wall a bit. Maybe some fun theme art that is inexpensive and can be easily switched out.

Kids Bedroom Reading Corner

My MIL made these floor cushions for Kell. They are perfect for laying on while enjoying a good book and Kell LOVES his books! The rug is another Ikea purchase {I promise this room isn’t sponsored by Ikea…you just can’t beat their prices for the style!} perfect for building block castles on and keep toes warm as they hit the floor in the morning. It’s a low pile, high traffic type rug so it will wear well.

Kid's Reading Corner {Dolen Diaries}

I picked up three of these photo ledges from Ikea that I turned into a book display. As he grows so will the types of books on these shelves. There you have a Boy Bedroom For All Ages, just one of the Boy Bedrooms for All Ages here in the Dolen household…more to come! But those are for another week! This week I’ve teamed up with some AUH-MAZING boy mamas {we have 36 boys between all of us!} to share our boy mama tips, tricks, & style….

Now let the Boy Madness continue….
