Mini Valentine Puppy Cookies

Mini Puppy Valentine Cookies {Dolen Diaries}

Kell has been very into playing puppy lately. His little bark and pant are so cute I can’t help but pet him! I did have to draw the line when he licked my face, however! I adore that boy but I don’t want anyone licking my face thank you very much! Now that he’s been helping me in the kitchen more, I thought it would be fun to make Mini Valentine Puppy Cookies.

The two little boys were totally into it! They loved taking turns pouring the ingredients in and since our puppy cookies call for two different kinds of dough there were a lot of ingredients to pour!

My Favorite Sugar Cookie Recipe {Dolen Diaries}

For the puppy faces you’ll need a basic sugar cookie recipe. My personal favorite is by Martha Stewart. I bought one of her special issue Holiday Cookies magazines the first year I was married and have kept that magazine just for this recipe ever since! I was going to link to her site for the recipe but the recipe she has there for her basic sugar cookie is a little different and it didn’t get great reviews. I don’t sift my flour or do some of the other very Martha-ie things so I’ve left those out of the directions….these are the Dolen version.

Sugar Cookies

  • 4 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon table salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 pound (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temp.
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract.
  1. In a large bowl mix together flour, salt, and baking powder. Set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat butter and sugar on medium speed until fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Add flour mixture {I do this a little at a time to make sure it all gets really mixed in well and to try to minimize the flour cloud…especially important when baking with boys.} and mix on low speed until thoroughly combined. Divide dough in half, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill until firm, at least 1 hour. *I typically chill mine overnight.
  2. Remove dough from refrigerator. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Martha says to use parchment paper on your cookie sheets but I use regular non-stick ones and they work just fine without the parchment paper. Dust your rolling area with flour.
  3. Roll dough to a scant 1/4 inch thickness {that was SO Martha but I love how she says that!}, lightly dust your cookie cutter in flour, and cut away!
  4. Bake for 12-15 minutes {I don’t like my sugar cookies to be too crisp so I keep a close watch and pull them after they look like they are cooked and firm…not browning}. Cool on wire racks, decorate.

You will also need a chocolate roll out cookie recipe. I used this one from Martha Stewart.

*This is the recipe I used for those football cookies I posted on Instagram, too!

Using a small heart cookie cutter {roughly 2 inches wide} we cut out several sugar cookie hearts. Then repeated the process with the chocolate dough.

For each puppy you’ll need one sugar cookie heart and one chocolate roll out cookie heart cut in half.

You’ll flip the sugar cookie heart upside down and smoosh a half of chocolate roll out cookie heart on either side of the “head” to make the ears.

You really want to make sure that they are attached or they’ll break apart after you bake them. Because these cookies are a mini version of the original recipe I only set the timer for 6 minutes then watched them like a hawk for another couple of minutes {8-10 minutes}.

Let the puppies cool and you’re ready to decorate! We used red & green mini M&M’s {these may have been in an unopened bag in the pantry because we never made the Christmas sugar cookies I had planned on making.}; white icing; & some black decorating gel.

I put a dab of icing in the places for the eyes and nose.

The boys placed two green M&M’s for the eyes.

Then a red M&M for the nose.

I took the black decorating gel and added pupils and whisker dots completing the face. Ok, how cute are these!?!

These would be the cutest little treats for a classroom Valentine’s Day party or even just a little treat for your kiddos lunches during Valentine’s Day week! I know my boys {even the big one} have enjoyed having a couple Mini Puppy Valentine cookies as a special treat in their lunches!
