DIY Pallet Wood Storage Crates

Pallet Wood Storage Crate {Dolen Diaries}

As you know, we Dolens love rustic industrial. I decided to call our washing machines the industrial and went for the rustic with the pallet wood. We actually had a stack of pallet wood that was already cut down and no longer in its pallet form. This made it super easy to pick through and find those amazing pieces with all of the rusty staples and nails that make me drool. If you don’t already have some pallet wood cut down that is your first task. If it is hard to find pallets in your area fencing boards are always a good trade and you can easily find those at Home Depot.

These were SO simple to make I promise you can make them, too! To start figure the size you want your crates to be. Mine are 10.5″ wide x 13″ long x 6″ tall.

Your cuts for 1 crate are:

4 – 10.5″ fronts/backs

4 – 13″ sides

4 – 6″ supports

1 – 10.5″ x 13″ bottom

{To keep things free I used wider pallet pieces but I also knew I wouldn’t be storing anything super small that would fall through the cracks. If I were making these for something else I would get thin plywood or particle board for the bottom.}

Since I was making so many of the same cut my husband showed me how to make a little stop block so I wasn’t having to measure each board. The simplicity of this is genius! Just clamp a block of wood to create a stopper for the length of the board you need and you’re good to go!

These crates essentially have two levels of sides to them. Build all of your levels first.

To build each level, I attached each side to a front first then both sides to the back.

Next, attach your bottom by nailing through the outside sides.

Once you have your bottom secure, nail in your supports in each inside corner of your crate. *I nailed these through the inside of the crate.

Now you are ready to add your second level. To keep the levels uniformly spaced slide a stir stick or a shim in between the levels while attaching to the support piece.

Done & done! I told you these were SUPER easy!

I think they look cool just the way they are but since I was trying to organize my laundry closet I added some stenciled labels. *I cut contact paper from the dollar store on my Cameo to use as a stencil. It worked wonderfully!

This project is perfect for a Garage Date Night! So pick a spot for your new pallet wood storage crates and get it on the calendar! Don’t forget to share your finished crates #garagedatenight I’d love to see them! {Check back next month for another Garage Date Night project!}
